Blogger Ahirudin
Denies Defaming
NSTP, Four Others

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Bernama) -- Former executive editor of the Malay Mail, Ahirudin Attan, has denied that words contained in his Rocky's Bru blog refer to the New Straits Times Press (M) Berhad (NSTP) and four others.

He also denies that words in his blog are meant to defame the five who are suing him for defamation and malicious falsehood.

The five -- NSTP, its deputy chairman Datuk Kalimullah Hassan, chief executive officer Datuk Syed Faisal Albar, group editor-in-chief Datuk Hishamuddin Aun and former group editor Brendan Pereira -- filed the suit against Ahirudin on Jan 4.

The suit pertained to certain articles and postings that had been published, or permitted to be published, by Ahirudin on his weblog. They claimed that the articles referred to them and were defamatory.

The blogger, in his statement of defence filed this afternoon at the Civil High Court Registry here, also said that the plaintiffs, in their amended statement of claim, did not state specifically the complete and whole details relating to the defamatory meaning.

On April 2, Justice Datuk Mohamed Hishamuddin Mohamed Yunus allowed Ahirudin to withdraw his application to strike out the defamation suit and ordered him to file his statement of defence before May 3.

He also fixed June 28 to hear the application by NSTP and the other four for an inter-parte injunction to require Ahirudin to remove certain articles from his weblog and restrain him from further publishing articles defamatory to them.
